The Return of the Omega-3 Man

Thus far we have looked at what omega-3s are and why we should be eating them... Since this would not be complete unless it was a trilogy, we will finish up with where you can find omega-3s.

Most people think of fish, and rightly so as fish are excellent sources of omega-3s. Salmon, halibut, snapper, and even canned tuna are great sources of omega-3s. Suppose you don't do the whole fish thing (a lot of Americans don't), where can you get your daily dose of omega-3s?

Walnuts are another great source of omega-3s. Allergic? No problem, try adding some flaxseed into your morning oatmeal. Flaxseed not your deal? Try some edamame or tofu. Wouldn't be caught dead consuming soy? You are pushing your luck...

Just kidding. Fortunately the market follows consumer trends (but hopefully omega-3s are here to stay). You can now find a variety of functional foods containing omega-3s. There are eggs that contain omega-3s because the hens were fed a special diet. Smart Balance makes a variety of products that contain omega-3s including butter, mayonnaise, and peanut butter.

Still not satisfied? There are a variety of supplements on the market. There is good old fashioned cod liver oil. A spoonful gives you a TON of omega-3s, but you will have fish burps... There are fish oil capsules that should eliminate the fish burp problem. Personally, I am not a fan of fish burps or swallowing huge horse pills. I take a gummy supplement for kids. No joke, the only problem is that 2 gummies only have 200mg of omega-3.

That brings me to my next topic... just how much omega-3 should we be consuming?
Unfortunately my trilogy just turned into a 4 part series. More to come...

I need to be better about my Omega 3's but like the walnut and flaxseed ideas. Cute pics too!

Are walnuts also rich in Omega 3's, or is that Omega 6? I hope it's Omega 3 because I eat a lot of them ;)

Snick chewed on my hair all night the other night, so I threw her out. I'm still being punished.
